2005 Bumbershoot Visual Art Exhibit
Re-contextualized Vistas: Concerning Place
Curated by Donna
Stack
Re-contextualized Vistas: Concerning Place is a multi-media
exhibition made up of eight Eastern/Central Washington artists who
work in media ranging from photography and sculpture to video and
installation. The impetus for this exhibition was a desire to present
work from the Eastern portion of Washington State in effort to challenge
and confront pre-conceived notions of art on the “East”
side. There is an impact that the Cascade Mountain Range has on
Washington as a physical and psychological barrier between the West/East
portions of the State. These physical and psychological barriers
propagate a very insular and myopic view of the “other side”.
These eight artists have been selected for varying reasons. However,
the unifying factor with all of these artists is the way they innately
deal with notions of place within their body of work, while working
contemporaneously. Each artist has created work that deals with
their individual notion of place. The result is a body of work that
challenges preconceived notions of specific place within the Eastern/Central
Washington landscape and re-presents it within a contemporary context.
Artists represented in Re-contextualized Vistas: Concerning
Place include: Renee Adams, Kimiko Atkins, Howard Barlow, Justin
Beckman, Natalie Schmidt Dotzauer, John
Paul Peña, Donna
Stack and Debbie
Young.
